Silent Night, COVID Night

Yesterday, we moved back to the orange phase in this wonderful world of COVID. We are just over a month away from Christmas, and we’re regressing as this virus makes waves again. I realized that this shift to the orange phase has troubled me more than the last one, more even than the original lock-down early in the year. But why? We just went through this a month ago. The regression to orange lasted about two weeks, then we returned to yellow and life went back to our (current) normal. What’s different this time is that I am seeing the real possibility that Christmas 2020 may not be anything remotely close to what I consider normal. And that’s bothering me.

Ho Ho Holiday Cheer

It’s that time of year! We are under two weeks away from Christmas Day. Can you believe that? Two weeks! This year has just flown by faster than I can even begin to understand. Yet here we are.

By this time in December, I’m usually knee deep into my Christmas viewing, listening to Christmas music, etc. But this year, I’m not there yet. I have only watched one single Christmas movie/special (Noelle on Disney+). I’ve just been too tired, both physically and mentally to invest myself any further.

But with two weeks to go, I recognize that it’s time to jump in with both feet. I think this might just be the boost I need to re-energize me for the rest of the year. So this week, I will let the spirit of the season wash over me. It all starts tonight.

Adventures in Old Québec

When you’re given the opportunity to have two days to yourself in Québec City, you take it. Or at least that’s what I did recently.

My wife had flown up earlier in the week on a work-related trip. On Wednesday morning, at the crack of first light, I hopped in the car and started my 7-hour ride to meet up with her.

Fair warning – it’s a slightly longer post.

Christmas Cheer

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

– Buddy the Elf

Those holiday ear-worms start assaulting us as early as November 1st.  You’ll be out looking for half-price Halloween candy, when you suddenly notice yourself humming along to a familiar tune, but  you’re not sure what it is immediately.  Then…it hits you – they’re playing Christmas music! Visions of Sugarplums

“If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am now.”
— Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase) in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

It’s that time of year again!  Time to hop on that holiday road and get into the spirit of Christmas.  Now last year, I documented the ups-and-downs of my holiday cheer in this blog.  (You can read all about that starting here.)  It definitely helped put my moods into perspective, and, I feel, helped keep my spirit up.

This year, I’ll not be doing the same.  I’ve already made an effort to get into the spirit more readily by watching some holiday-themed movies and TV shows, as well as listening to that ever-present Christmas music.  For this month’s posts, I wanted to talk about some of my favourite Christmas movies, TV shows and songs.

For today’s post, let’s discuss Christmas movies.  Here are my top 5 Christmas movies: Continue reading “Visions of Sugarplums”
