Love of Reading

Shortly before our trip to Walt Disney World earlier this spring, I observed that I had not been doing much reading for a little while. As someone who has been an avid reader most of his life, it was, at first, a bit troubling to me to notice this. My first instinct was to just pick up one of the multiple books that I had “in progress”, but this was a futile activity. No sooner would I sit down to read, I would find myself drowsing off to sleep. I could not bring myself to focus long enough to get through more than a couple of pages without nodding off.

Making Magical Memories

I am now a week removed from my long-awaited Disney World vacation. I can hardly believe that a week has passed, but that is what the calendar is telling me. While out on our daily walk yesterday, the realization came to me that I am now fully into my post-Disney blues. It happens inevitably after every trip. Once you’ve been away from that magic bubble and reintegrated into the “real” world, it’s only a matter of time before the Disney Blues settle in.

So what better time for me to revisit some of those memories via a blog post? Maybe looking back will help me get over the blues. (added bonus: I’ve added a bunch of pictures!)

The Write Way

I’ve long had a love/hate relationship with writing. I’ve gone through periods of my life where I did creative writing. I’ve craved the attention that writing brought me on occasion, but I’ve also shied away from said attention. I guess I’m a bit conflicted when it comes to writing. Even this blog has seen me go in spurts. I’ll go all-in for a few months (or longer) and write regular blog posts, and then I’ll not write a word for months on end.

In my last blog post, I challenged you to find something that scares you in your life and take a step in that direction. Fear tells us where we need to go, if we pay attention. Writing was what I chose to focus on.

Let’s talk about writing and what drives me.

Life is Meant to be Lived

I was out for a drive on my own yesterday and put on a carpool karaoke-style playlist of songs that I love to rock out to. As I hit the road, I hit play and the first song that came on was Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Perfection for setting the tone of my drive: up-tempo, rocking and, above all, fun. What would be up next on my randomly shuffled playlist?

Song number two: Paranoid by Black Sabbath.

Meditation

When you think about meditation, what do you picture? Do you see a long-haired hippy kinda guy wearing nothing but white? Or some wise old monk sitting on a mountain top? Maybe a group of uber-flexible people sitting in weirdly unnatural positions (seriously, they look like pretzels!).

Many people say things like, “I tried it once, and it didn’t work.” Or maybe you’ve heard (or even said it yourself), “I can’t turn off my brain long enough to do that.” In reality, people have as many different opinions and views on meditation as there are different kinds of meditation. It’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of approach, and that’s what I want to discuss today.

Lighten Up

As I write these words, I am just a few hours shy of my Second Life Day. March 3rd marks the 15th anniversary of my discovery of being diabetic and the entire ordeal that was my diabetic odyssey. I’m not going to rehash that tale in detail again, as I’ve written about it in detail in past years. You can read my multi-post blog starting here.

As I approach my Second Life Day each year, I become very introspective and look at my life; this year has been no exception. What I’ve come to discover I need to focus on is quite simple. I need to lighten up.
