Eat Local

While we’re in the midst of this global pandemic, I think it is very important for us to continue to support small, local establishments. At the top of that list, for me, is small independent restaurants.

I’m not going to lie and say that large corporate chains aren’t going to be hurt by this ongoing crisis, but they have a much better chance of getting through an extended period than will some of the smaller local spots. And I know I can state unequivocally that most of the small spots have better food and service than the big chains. So with that in mind, here are a few of my favourite local restaurants (that are still open and offering delivery/take out service).

Sugar Roll Ramen & Sushi

Beautiful spread at Sugar Roll

I consider this to be the best sushi I’ve had in the city. Maybe even in the province. My wife and I regularly drop in for the delicious food and warm, friendly service. This is where we’ve eaten on 4 out of 5 of the last New Year’s Eves. Available on Skip the Dishes or directly through the restaurant. Check out their Facebook page or call (506) 386-7655 for more info.

Five Bridges Bar & Grill

Fish and chips (or onion rings!) from Five Bridges

I’ve yet to try an item off of the menu of this Riverview establishment that I have not loved. “Great food, served right” It’s more than just a motto. The fish and chips are delicious. This is our go-to spot for our traditional Good Friday fish and chip lunch. Just like we did today! Check out the menu on their website or call (506) 384-0992 to place an order. You can also get delivery via Skip the Dishes.

Cinta Ria Malaysian Fusion

Beef Rendang from Cinta Ria

When I first decided to try Cinta Ria, it was out of curiosity. I was looking at restaurant reviews for the city and this small little spot was ranked #2 on Trip Advisor. I went in not knowing what Malaysian fusion was, but left a big fan! For my first meal, I ordered the Beef Rendang. I cannot begin to tell you how amazing this is to my taste buds. I’ve been back numerous times over the past couple of years, but I’ve yet to try anything else on the menu! So. Good. You can order directly via their website or on Skip the Dishes.

Gusto Italian Bar & Grill

A veritable smorgasbord of Italian delights awaits you at Gusto. Whether you’re in the mood for tasty pasta or a gorgeous wood-fired pizza, they’ve got you covered. Add to that the fish, steak and chicken offerings, and you’ve got something to satisfy your you’re craving. Oh, and did I mention the cheesecake? Make sure to save room, or do what we do and get it to go. Available through Skip the Dishes, or order by phone at (506) 204-7177. Menu on their website.

Mansu BBQ

Bibimbap from Mansu BBQ

This delightful Korean BBQ is a little hidden gem in Dieppe. They started off as a vendor at the Farmer’s Market, and expanded to a full restaurant a couple of years ago. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re a fan of Asian food. They have their current take-out menu available on their Facebook page. You can order take-out or delivery by calling (506) 830-6800.

Saigon Thai

Saigon Thai is another of mine and my wife’s favourite spots in the city. We hit this regularly on our weekly Friday night supper date. I cannot recommend the Imperial Rolls more highly. The Spicy Egg Noodle is my go-to dish here, but there are so many tasty options on the menu. You can view their menu offerings on their website, and order via phone at (506) 869-9998. They are also available via Skip the Dishes.

And there you have it – a few of my favourite local restaurants that are still operating and serving up amazing food. If you’re tired of cooking, getting fed up with box after box of KD, or just wanting to go out and support local businesses, I hope that a few of these ideas will bring you a little joy and put a bit of delight in your bellies.

Tell me, what are your favourite local establishments?

Be safe out there, practice physical distancing, and spread a little Light in the world.
